My first stub nib fountain pen: Jinhao Centennial ✖️ Jowo #6 1.1 stub

I was thinking to get my hands on a stub nib for quite a long time. I originally considered getting the Nemosine 1.1 stub nib as I have heard so many good words about this smooth stub nib. Unfortunately, the shipping cost from Birmingham Pen Co. to Canada is just insane. That plan didn’t work out.

Another stub nib option on my wishlist is the TWSBI 1.1 stub nib. But I am not a fan of TWSBI fountain pens. The only one that catches my eyes is the TWSBI diamond 580 rose gold. However, I can’t justify 120CAD just for trying a stub nib.

So I went with my third option — the DIY route. I grabbed a Jowo #6 1.1 stub nib unit from FPnibs when I ordered my flex nib earlier and swapped it on my Jinhao Centennial Ivory. After doing some adjustment to the nib, it now writes so smooth and juicy. I absolutely love it.

It was a bit of a hassle to do the swapping actually. The Jinhao housing from the Jinhao Centennial Ivory was much tighter than that of my Jinhao Centennial Sakura. I had to use a pair of pliers to take the Jinhao nib out.

The Jowo #6 feed will fit the Jinhao housing but I still decided to use the Jinhao feed as I feel the Jinhao feed provides a wetter flow. Due to the tightness of the housing, it was difficult to insert both the Jowo nib and the Jinhao feed together at the same time. It was much easier to insert the feed into the housing first, then slide the nib inside afterwards. The swapping was basically done at this point.

One more thing I did was to adjust the ink flow of the nib as I would love to have a super juicy stub to play with shading or shimmer inks. I followed the ink flow tutorial from Pen Habbit to make the stub nib writes really wet. The wet ink flow provides more lubrication between the nib and the paper so it writes so smooth and juicy.

Ink: Sailor Manyo Fuji

Paper: Tomoe River white 52gsm

I love the combination of Jinhao Centennial and the stub nib. It is a great low-budget choice for trying a stub nib and it is aesthetically pleasing. I’m not bothered by the mismatch between the nib colour and trim colour. If this is something that will bother others, swapping a gold colour Jowo nib will easily solve the problem.
